C.K. McClatchy High School funds a part-time coordinator
to manage HISP. However, the program
does not receive operating monies and
must raise funds to provide the “extras”
important to a rich educational
environment.
As the program’s parent organization,
the HISP Council raises money and
solicits contributions through its
Direct Donation program—soliciting
contributions from HISP families, HISP
alumni, community organizations,
foundations, and businesses. The
annual
budget is approximately $20,000.
Direct Donation is HISP’s annual fundraising drive. Through
Direct Donation, HISP families are spared the litany of fundraisers many
experienced at the elementary and middle school levels. Instead, HISP families
are encouraged to write one check at the beginning of the year or make
donations throughout the year in amounts suited to each family’s individual
budget. (See
HISP Donors
for a list of contributing families and other supporters for this school year.)
Funds raised through Direct Donation are used to support the
program—its staff, teachers, and students—and to provide the “curriculum
boosters” that make HISP one of the top high school programs in the region.
Through the generosity of parents, HISP continues its tradition of offering a
stellar academic experience that rivals those of any private school.
Funding priorities may change from year to year, but
typically include the following:
- Technology for HISP classrooms that meet the demands of a twenty-first
century learning environment (such as updated software and high-tech ELMO
overhead projectors)
- Freshmen welcome and orientation for 140 new students and their
families, including HISP t-shirts for all new students
- Guest speaker honorariums for visiting lecturers who bring global
perspectives directly into classrooms
- Books and curriculum materials (such as classroom maps, film, and
documentaries) that enhance HISP courses
- After-school cultural workshops where students explore and experience
firsthand a wide variety of customs, traditions, arts, and crafts practiced
here and abroad
- An end-of-year celebration and senior recognition event for community
building among HISP families
- Communications (such as the parent mailings, the HISP website, and HISP
eNews—the program’s electronic newsletter) as
well as marketing materials for recruiting new students
