President’s Message: Every Parent Counts
(August 2011)

Welcome! This year, my second child enters his final year as a HISP student and I enter my 7th and final year as a parent volunteer at McClatchy and in this amazing program. I hope that all of you get involved at CKM in whatever way you can.

As a parent of a HISP student, you are a member of the HISP Council, a 501c3 organization, represented by a Board of volunteers. The Board, however, relies on every parent to bring their time, their financial support and/or their expertise into the program in some way.

The HISP Volunteer Interest Form outlines a number of areas where your help is needed; the Direct Donation Form asks for your financial support. We do not do fundraising!

Please join us in our mission to enrich the Humanities and International Studies Program as well as C. K. McClatchy High School. Your support allows us to sponsor both the school-wide College Night and Financial Aid Night (October and November), the HISP Family BBQ (May) which celebrates our graduating seniors as well as our popular Cultural Events Workshops. Additionally, we fund the subscription to the popular Questia online library and other technological enrichments to our program. And perhaps most importantly, we buy books! Our program is rich in literature and the paperbacks your children are reading during the school year are continually supplemented by HISP donations.

Because of your generosity, this past year we were able to partner with PTSA to offer
grants on a school-wide basis to worthy faculty applicants that will enrich the greater
McClatchy community:

  • Math Department: $3,000 for document cameras/portable visual presenters
  • AP Chemistry: $2,500 for electronic balances
  • AP Biology: $2,300 for spectrophotometer, human blood slides and equipment
  • Molecular Biology: $3,000 for lab supplements
  • French: $800 for French dictionaries, an audio/book set of The Stranger in French
  • Camera Composition: $750 for green screen kits and century stands

Public schools continue to be hit very hard in these difficult economic times. It is our goal to continue to bring our program the enrichment that has made it one of the premier educational opportunities in our region. We welcome your support!
