President’s Message

(September 2017)

Hi HISP Families,

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year! I hope everyone is off to a good start.

Last year we said adieu to Mr. Wong and Mr. Tagg, but this year we welcome Mr. Griffin and Mr. Mascincupp, not to mention 140 of the best freshman in the state!

As you may know, HISP focuses on preparing our kids for the international community our world has become. To that end, in addition to the exceptional instruction our students receive, they will have HISP-sponsored field trips, cultural events, and community service opportunities in which to participate.

Some specific events that students can look forward to are:

  • Meet the Teachers Night, Tuesday, September 12, at 6 p.m. in the Media Center
  • College 101 with Kathryn Plommer from Kaplan, Tuesday, September 26, at 6 p.m. in the Media Center
  • College Night with Scott Hamilton (College Planner), Monday, October 23, at 6 p.m. in the Media Center
  • Field trips to see plays in San Francisco and Berkeley
  • College Parent Panel Winter 2018
  • Cultural Events Day Spring 2018
  • More events are coming and will be posted here as dates are firmed up.

HISP Council meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. (except for the meeting on September 12, which will begin at 5 p.m.) in Room 201 (Mrs. Wong’s room). If you are interested in attending HISP Council meetings, please do! They are a great way to connect to HISP in particular and CKM in general. Your current HISP Board officers are:Sue Ciminelli, Vice President; Mihran Berejikian, Secretary; Piper Muse, Treasurer; Poonie Holst and Lisa Poon, Cultural Events Chair, Mareva Brown, Webmaster; Kellie Schneider – E-News

Our teachers and Board work hard to provide an elite school experience at a public school price. But they can’t do it alone: HISP can’t run without the three Ts of service: time, talent, and treasure. We are currently in need of parents willing to go over college requirements with freshmen. If you are willing to volunteer for HISP activities, please email Mrs. Wong at Similarly, if you have a talent (Origami, crepe-making, fencing) you’d like to share for the benefit of our students, please let us know! You could enrich students’ experience in HISP greatly with a one-hour presentation!

Finally, if you have not already contributed to HISP (or even if you have!), please consider donating now. With cultural events trips to San Francisco and plays in Berkeley are coming up, and we need funds for buses. Any amount is welcome!

Have a great year!
Betsy Long
