2012 HISP Graduates—College Bound

The 2012 HISP seniors are on the move, ready to take the next step to post-secondary education or in service to others. Like those who have gone before, seniors received acceptances from schools throughout the region, state, and nation. They leave HISP exceptionally prepared for the rigors of college and beyond. The HISP College Bound Report lists over 500 acceptances offered to HISP seniors from nearly 130 institutions. Nearly all seniors (118) will be attending college in the fall; three of our students have chosen to spend a year or more in service to others. Congratulations, HISP Class of 2012!

Coordinator’s Year End Message 2012
(May 2012)

As we race through the last quarter of the 2011-2012 academic year, it’s nice to take a breath, exhale and look back at how the year has gone. For me it is a bittersweet look back, as my daughter and our last child graduates from HISP at CKM and moves on to college after four fantastic years here (18 really, since she grew up at McClatchy High School).

Your HISP Donations at Work
HISP and PTSA Partner to Strengthen School Programs

The HISP Council and PTSA have awarded $9,000 in mini-grants to strengthen school programs that benefit CKM students. Using surplus donations from HISP and PTSA annual fundraising drives, nine projects that strengthen academic offerings or enhance electives, the arts, and the humanities were funded. Materials with a life-span beyond one year were given top priority. The HISP Council and PTSA are pleased to announce the following awards:

  • AP Biology ($1,605): Lab equipment to meet criteria of the AP Biology exam (recently revised by the College Board)
  • AP Psychology ($790): Model of the human brain that can be disassembled for focused examination
  • Chemistry ($862): Lab stools so every student has a seat at a lab table to conduct experiments
  • English 9 ($390): Of Mice and Men (35 copies/class set) for freshman literature class
  • Music ($2,000): New sheet music for all instrumental classes
  • Ceramics ($924): Tools for students to use in producing work
  • German 3/4 ($500): Literature books to complete a class set
  • Spanish ($1,600): Laptop/projector/document camera/cart to augment classroom instruction with rich and varied online resources
  • Counseling Office ($60): Four copies of The Book of Colleges

This year’s requests totaled over $28,000, three times the amount available. Mini-grants are offered periodically as surplus funds accumulate. If you would like to make a donation to help build the fund for our next round of mini-grants, you may donate online (see PayPal link on HISP home page) or mail a check payable to HISP to the HISP office. Thank you to all our parent supporters for your generous donations to HISP and the PTSA.

High School Study Abroad Programs
CCI Seeking Host Families

Check out your newest page on the HISP website—Study Abroad—which provides information on cultural exchange programs for high school students. Over the years, several HISP students have participated in study abroad and countless HISP families have hosted students from other countries. One of the programs, CCI (Center for Cultural Interchange), is seeking qualified families to host students (ages 15-18 years old) from Germany, Belgium, Taiwan, Vietnam, Hungary, Poland, Colombia, Brazil, and China among many others. Interested HISP families should contact CCI’s Sacramento Area Rep, Lindsay Zimmerman.

Reminders

HISP Donations Continue
PayPal Now Available

Many thanks to those parents who made have made recent donations to HISP (see HISP Donors). With a strong first quarter start and continued donations into the second quarter, we are within reach of our fundraising goal of $20,000. Funds received beyond our fundraising goal are allocated to the HISP Fund for Excellence which provides mini-grants to teachers and staff to strengthen academic offerings or enhance electives, the arts, and the humanities at CKM. Last year in partnership with the PTSA, the fund provided money for science, math, photography, and world language materials and equipment that directly benefited students. For parents wishing to make an online donation (either one-time or recurring monthly), HISP now offers a PayPal option (see HISP Donors to access the donate buttons). And finally, as the tax year comes to an end, remember that your donation to HISP is tax deductible. As always, thank you for supporting HISP.

Sacramento Public Library:
Virtually At Your Fingertips

The Sacramento Public Library offers a “virtual” treasure trove of information useful to high school students. The library’s online Knowledge Center Databases provides access to digital information such as newspapers and magazines, books and media, and college and careers resource. High school students will find the section “For Students (K-12)” most helpful; it features information and primary sources—such as academic journals, biographies, and a virtual reference library—they can use to complete research projects. Use your library card or obtain a temporary online e-card you can use for up to 14 days to access the databases. Those with iPhones and iPads may also download the Mango Mobile Library app to gain access to the databases from those devices.

Going to College:
CKM’s College & Career Center at Your Service

CKM is fortunate to have a College & Career Center to help prepare students for life after high school and realize the dream of going to college. Specific services/events include: bringing college recruiters to CKM to meeting with students/parents; helping students complete college applications; assisting students with their college essays; and posting scholarship bulletins to alert students/parents to potential funding for post-secondary education. In addition, the Center works closely with CKM’s Counseling Office to ensure students are aware of college entrance testing (ACT, PSAT, SAT) opportunities on campus. Check the HISP Calendar to view the list of upcoming College & Career Center events.
